Veterans Remodel Project 2

This Veterans’ Remodeling project was funded by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs as part of their Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) program.  This program allows our disabled veterans to remain in their home as long as possible.  The veteran’s house is a two story duplex.  The requirements for this project were to create a wheelchair accessible entryway, kitchen and bathroom and adapt the rest of the house to meet the VA’s minimum requirements.

At the front door, we removed the existing landing and built an ADA compliant porch with a concrete walkway to the street.  A small retaining wall was built to support the new porch and handrails were added.

All of the flooring in the house was replaced.  We installed tile in the bathroom and vinyl plank flooring in the rest of the house.  Doorways were widened to 36” and new doors with lever style door handles were installed.

In the kitchen, the new cabinets feature soft-close doors, pull out shelves and 34” countertops without sharp edges or corners.  Next to the stove the accessible deep drawers allow easy access to pots and pans.  Pull out shelves were added to the new pantry.  A roll under counter creates a wheelchair accessible work area and we added an additional work area that is also accessible from a wheelchair.

The doorway into the veteran’s primary bathroom relocated into the bedroom and widened to accommodate a wheelchair.  The bathroom was expanded to allow a 5’ turning area.  A roll-in shower area was added with five grab bars for safety.  A new roll under sink was installed.

We are very proud of the work we do for our veterans, if you know of a veteran who could benefit from the SAH program please visit the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs benefits page for more information.
